Visa, Immigration, Scholarship, Housing

If you have any concerns about getting visas, immigration, scholarship, housing, please take a look at this page.

My number is listed as successful applicants on the website of the department. When do I receive a document necessary for my student visa application?

The applicants listed on the department web page are the second-stage successful applicants, not the final successful applicants approved by the Graduate School. Documents issued by the University of Tokyo required for your visa application will be sent out after the announcement of final accepted students by the Graduate School, which is the first half of September for Schedule A and the first half of February for Schedule B. If you need the exact date and time of the final announcement, please see the Guideline by the Graduate School.

I am wondering if I cannot obtain a visa due to COVID-19 and if I will be unable to come to Japan. What would I do then?

The temporary measure to allow students to change the time of admission due to the new coronavirus has been abolished.

Currently, it takes several months on average to issue a student visa, making it difficult for applicants who do not currently reside in Japan to enter in October (for the Schedule A entrance examination) or in April (for the Schedule B entrance examination). We strongly recommend that applicants who do not currently reside in Japan and do not have Japanese citizenship choose April admission for the Schedule A entrance examination and October admission for the Schedule B entrance examination.

It is possible to take a leave of absence immediately after enrollment, but each program has its own limit on the total period of leave of absence, so we recommend that you schedule your enrollment well after your visa is issued.

Can I apply for scholarships?

Scholarships provided by UTokyo, MEXT (Ministry of Education), other organizations are available. Please see the list available below.

Is any dormitory available?

Yes. Available for foreign students.

See University dormitory (International Students).

Can I enter Japan?

Due to the pandemic, the situation may change quickly. Please search "entry" in https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/adm/inbound/en/index.html.

As of August 2023, it may take a few months on average to issue a student visa. Therefore, if you are not currently residing in Japan and if you do not have a Japan citizenship, it might be difficult for you to pass the A schedule exams in September and come to Japan at the very beginning of October (or pass the B schedule exams in February and come to Japan at the very beginning of April).
