Submitting English Proficiency Scores

I cannot submit English scores by the designated deadline. Can I negotiate?

Applicants in Schedule A do not need to submit an English proficiency score report; they can take the TOEFL ITP on campus.

If you take the entrance examinations on Schedule B, you are required to submit an English proficiency score report. If you are not able to submit the score in time, you may take the entrance exams in Schedule A, six months later. This is non-negotiable.

What types of English scores can I submit?

English proficiency score submission is not accepted for Schedule A. Only TOEFL iBT is accepted for Schedule B. Note that TOEFL iBT Home Edition is not accepted.

How can I send the original official certificate of English score reports?

  • TOEFL (iBT)
    • Please ask ETS to send your Official Score Reports directly to our graduate school. Use the following codes for TOEFL Institutional Score Report address (GSFS will not be able to confirm your score if you use a code other than the below). You must submit the codes by the application deadline.
      • DI (Designated Institution) code: “8001”, Department code: “99”

I took an English exam years ago. Can I submit the old score?

Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the University of Tokyo, has a rule about the valid date of English scores. We accept English scores if

  • you apply to Schedule B, then
    • your test date must be Feb 1, 2022 or later.

All English test organizations say their scores are valid for two years. We, the University of Tokyo, do not have a method to verify the autheticity of your score if the score was taken older than this; therefore we do not accept scores older than these dates.

I submitted my English score to the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences for a previous entrance examination. Do I need to resubmit the same score?

Yes, it is required; for the Schedule B entrance examination, please submit a request to ETS to send it (submit the codes) after September and by the application deadline.

Sending the official score certificate of TOEFL takes too long. Can I submit it later than the deadline?

Please ask ETS to send your score to Graduate School of Frontier Science, UTokyo by the application deadline. If you do so, the score certificate will reach us before we actually need it.

I wonder if you could let me know whether my official score certificate sent by ETS reached GSFS?

You must have asked ETS to send your TOEFL score to Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, UTokyo by the application deadline. Then, your score must reach us by the exam dates.

If you have some issue with submitting TOEIC scores and you are afraid if your score reach us by the deadline, please explain your situation in the note in the online application system.

How much does my English score weigh in the document-based screening?

We do not disclose how we evaluate individual applicants in the first-stage screening based on the submitted documents.

You can ask GSFS to disclose your raw scores a few weeks after we officially announce the list of accepted applicants.

What is the minimum TOEFL score?

We do not disclose the minimum TOEFL score.

The quota is determined by MEXT, and we usually cannot accept significantly more students than the quota. This implies that if too many applicants take higher scores than you, you would fail even if you take a high score. Therefore, we cannot guarantee anything based on the absolute score.

At least, we expect that you are at the university level of proficiency.

My English score certificate will reach you after the deadline. Should I tell it to you by email or by phone?

If you ask ETS to send your Official Score Reports to us, GSFS, that will definitely reach by the time we actually need it. If you have a particular situation in which you cannot send TOEIC Official Score Certificate early, drop us a line at the note in the online application system.

I have a photocopy of my Official Score Reports (TOEFL). Can I submit this?

You need to submit a PAPER official score certificate issued by individual English proficiency test organizations. We accept only original certificates, so please do not send us a photocopy. Please send the (counterfait-proof) original official paper certificate to us. Please note that you also need to submit an electronic copy online.

Can I ask ETS to send my TOEFL score electronically to GSFS?

We are aware that ETS can send your score to us via an electronic method. You may not have to send us a paper certificate in the future. However, we found that we need to newly develop a computer system to accept such electronic scores. At this moment, we are not sure if our development completes by the exam date. Please make sure you ask ETS to send a paper official score certificate by the application deadline so that our paper-based workflow works.

I submitted TOEFL iBT score. Is the score of Speaking and Writing considered?

We may consider Speaking and Writing.

English test organizations provide different exams that measure your English skills in different aspects in different ways. Some tests measure Speaking and Writing, while some do not. Therefore, comparing scores from different organizations inherently involves difficult issues. What we can say is that we do not automatically ignore scores of Speaking and Writing.

I have one score with a higher score in Reading and another with a higher score in Listening. Which is more advantageous for me to submit?

How we handle your English score is not disclosed.

However, when more than one score is submitted, we will select the one that is most advantageous to the applicant and use it as the score for the test. so please submit all your scores if you have any concerns. Please note that we do not use MyBest Score of TOEFL.

Can I send in Official Score Reports (TOEFL) or Official Score Certificate (TOEIC) that is not submitted as a web submission score?

If there is no other way for you, go ahead; we will just ignore it. To avoid confusion, please do not send official certificates other than those submitted as web submission scores where possible.

I have already used TOEFL Test Taker Score Report for other purpose. Can I submit one I downloaded from the ETS website?

You can submit (as a pdf file) the test taker report that you downloaded from the ETS website. Initially, by the application deadline, we require only the web submission score. However, an Official Score Reports with the exact same score must be sent from ETS directly to the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences.

If the official certificate with the exact same score is not sent to the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the acceptance may be cancelled or the applicant may be dismissed. Please note that this may lead to cancellation of enrollment or other actions.
