Written Exams

We answer questions regarding the written exams.

Can I get the problem booklets of both Japanese and English problem?

No. You can choose either.

Do I have to take problems that corresponds to the research subjects of the lab I wish to join?

No. You can choose any problems within the specified rules.

I cannot attend the in-person written exam on Schedule A because I live outside of Japan. What should I do?

As of July 18, 2023, it is possible to enter Japan from outside the country. It is possible to obtain a visa after the application deadline and take the Schedule A exam in person in August, here in the Kashiwa campus. You need to attend the in-person examinations regardless of your country of residence. No show will lead to disqualification. If you apply to Schedule A, please be aware that you have to come to Japan. Note that Schedule B also switched into in-person exams, and therefore you need to physically come to Japan to take the entrance exams.

Can I bring a calculator and use it during the written exams?

No, you can't. If you bring a calculator into the exams, you will be disqualified and considered as failed.

In a written exam, which hardness of pencil should I use, HB or B?

In specialized academic exams, the hardness of the pencil does not matter as long as the answers are easy to read.

In the TOEFL ITP mark sheet exam, it is recommended to use an HB pencil (or mechanical pencil). Please note that only TOEFL iBT score submissions will be accepted for Schedule B.
